Why Rasgulla Travels So Well Across Canada
Rasgulla is one of the few Indian sweets that actually survives a courier trip from Vancouver to Halifax without losing what makes it good. It sits in its own light sugar syrup, sealed in a tin, so it doesn't dry out or crumble the way fresh mithai from a sweet shop counter would.
That's the whole reason we can carry Bikaneri Rasgulla at all. It's shelf-stable until opened, which means it makes the same 5 to 10 business day trip as our rice and lentils to any of the 10 provinces and 3 territories, no cold pack required.

Bikaneri Rasgulla: What Makes This One Different
Bikaneri Rasgulla comes out of Bikaner, Rajasthan, a region known for doing dairy sweets with a slightly firmer bite than the Bengali original. The balls hold their shape a bit better in transit and in the fridge, which is part of why this is the tin we carry rather than a softer style.
Straight out of the jar it's ready to eat cold, but a few minutes at room temperature brings the syrup back to life and softens the texture further. Some customers warm it gently and spoon it over vanilla ice cream, which is not traditional but is genuinely very good.
One 1kg tin comfortably serves a family dinner or a small gathering, and it keeps in the fridge for weeks once opened as long as the rasgulla stays submerged in its syrup.
Gulab Jamun, Tinned Sweets, and What We're Adding Next
Gulab jamun, the deep-fried milk-solid balls soaked in cardamom syrup, is the other sweet everyone asks us about. We don't currently stock a tinned gulab jamun, but it's the same family of sweet as rasgulla: dairy-based, syrup-soaked, meant to be eaten cold or gently warmed.
Tinned Indian sweets in general (rasgulla, rasmalai, gulab jamun) all travel the same way: sealed cans or jars packed in syrup that don't need refrigeration until opened. That's what makes them realistic to ship across the country when a fresh sweet shop box simply isn't.
We keep our Desserts shelf small and honest rather than stocking sweets we can't guarantee arrive well. As we bring in more tinned mithai, it'll show up there first.

Sweets for Dashain, Tihar, and Everyday Chiya
Sweets show up everywhere in the Nepali festival calendar. During Dashain they're part of the tika and blessing ritual at elders' homes, and during Tihar sel roti and sweets get passed between neighbours as sagun.

Right now our tinned sweet is Bikaneri Rasgulla. We haven't found a gulab jamun tin we're happy to ship yet, but we're actively looking, and any new tinned mithai will be added to our Desserts shelf first.
How should I store rasgulla once it arrives?
Keep it in the fridge once opened, submerged in its own syrup in a sealed container. It'll stay good for a couple of weeks that way. Unopened, the tin keeps at room temperature until the date printed on the label.
