A hand-felted wool cat cave shaped like a storybook pumpkin cottage: a marigold roof with a scalloped eave, a round doorway, a little four-petal window cut into the side, and a long blue stem curling off the top like something drawn for a picture book. It is meant to be looked at as much as slept in. Stand it in a room that already leans that way — a nursery, a reading corner, a house with picture books and warm lamps and a bit of whimsy already in it — and it stops reading as pet furniture and starts reading as part of the set, a little house at the foot of a big one. Then the cat puts its head out of the doorway and the whole room turns into a scene. That is the moment people photograph. Underneath the storybook shape it is a serious cat bed. Cats settle into a covered cave far faster than an open cushion, because an enclosed space with one entrance is what they look for when they want to sleep unbothered, and wool holds warmth on its own — no heat pad, no synthetic filling, no plastic frame. The shell is firm enough to stand up on its own and soft enough for a cat to push through the doorway and curl up inside. It suits kittens and average-sized adult cats; small dogs and rabbits use them too. Every one is felted by hand in Nepal from natural sheep wool, shaped over a form with nothing but soap and water. Because each is worked by hand, the curl of the stem, the fall of the eave and the way the blue bleeds up into the orange come out different every time — yours will not be identical to the photograph, and that is the point.
