Natural Herringbone
A small handwoven hemp bag for the things you would rather not put down: a passport, a phone, a folded wad of notes, keys, a card or two. It wears two ways. Buckled round the waist it sits flat and out of the way, and let out longer it slings across the body over one shoulder, which is the way most people end up carrying it. The webbing strap adjusts between the two in a second and closes with a side release buckle. There are two zipped compartments, a full width one across the main body and a flatter pocket on the front, so a passport travels apart from loose change and you are not opening the whole bag at a counter. The hemp is industrial fibre hemp, grown for the stalk rather than the flower, which is what the THC free mark woven into the label refers to. It grows in the Nepali hills without irrigation or pesticide, and the stalk is retted, hand spun and woven on a handloom. It starts out a rough cloth, softens every time you use it, and gets stronger rather than weaker when it is wet, which is a useful thing in a bag that spends the day against you in the heat. It comes in six colourways: three herringbone weaves in natural, cocoa and coral, and three striped ones in black and cream, black and bronze, and indigo. The bag is the same in every one of them, so the choice is only about which cloth the weaver reached for. Because the cloth is woven and cut by hand, the run of the stripe and the exact set of the weave come out a little different every time, so yours will not be identical to the photograph. Ships worldwide from our Vancouver store with live carrier rates at checkout.
Every piece is worked individually, so colour, thickness and finish vary a little from one to the next. That variation is a feature of the craft, not a flaw.

- How to use
- Buckle it round the waist for a day on your feet, or let the strap out and wear it across the body. The front pocket is the one to keep a boarding pass or a transit card in, since it opens without opening the bag.
- Care
- Hand wash cold with a mild soap and air dry in the shade. Hemp and cotton both take hot water badly, and the dyed cloths are happiest out of direct sun. Do not bleach or tumble dry. The cloth softens and relaxes with every wash, which is the fibre behaving as it should.
Frequently asked questions
What does handmade in Nepal mean here?
Every piece is made by hand from natural wool by artisans in Nepal — felted, shaped and finished individually rather than cut from a roll or moulded. It is ethically sourced.
Why does mine look different from the photograph?
Because each one is worked individually, colour, thickness and finish vary from piece to piece. That variation is a feature of the craft, not a flaw — no two are identical.
How do I care for felted wool?
Spot clean with cold water and a little mild soap and air dry away from direct heat. Hand wash only if it needs more, reshaping while damp. Never tumble dry — heat and agitation shrink felted wool.
