More than a plate
In Nepal, the thali — the round metal platter — is not just tableware; it is the way a meal is presented and shared. A traditional brass thali set holds a mound of rice at its centre, ringed by small bowls (katora) of dal, tarkari, achar, and curd, so that an entire dal-bhat arrives as one complete, balanced composition.
Brass has been the metal of the Nepali kitchen for centuries — warm in colour, naturally antimicrobial, and prized in many homes for both its beauty and its place in ritual and festive dining.
At the centre of celebration
A brass thali comes into its own at festivals and feasts — Dashain, Tihar, weddings, and family gatherings — when the table is laid with chiura, bhatmas, achar, meat, papad, and sweets. Serving guests on gleaming brass is an act of hospitality and respect, a way of honouring both the food and the people sharing it.
The same platters often carry ritual significance, used to present offerings during puja, blurring the line between the everyday and the sacred in a way that is deeply Nepali.
Where the craft comes from in Nepal
Nepal’s brass and copper craft is more than a thousand years old, and its most celebrated home is Patan (Lalitpur) in the Kathmandu Valley, where Newar metalsmiths have worked for generations. The Newar artisans of Patan — and of neighbouring Bhaktapur and Kathmandu, whose workshops flourished under the Malla kings — are renowned for techniques like repoussé (hammering and embossing from behind) and chiselled detailing, the same skills that shape everything from temple statuary to dining vessels.
The craft has other historic centres too, notably Tansen and Palpa and the Pokhara area in western Nepal, where forging hollow utensils from brass and copper sheet is a living tradition. So a brass thali is not just dinnerware but a small piece of this metalworking heritage — a Newar art form carried to the everyday table.
Bringing the tradition home in Canada
For Nepali families in Canada, a brass thali turns an ordinary dinner into something that feels rooted and ceremonial — a tangible piece of home on the table. It is durable enough to last for generations and only grows more beautiful with use.
